Called to Gather - Part 2

In Part 2 of Called to Gather, Lead Pastor Ben Miller opens Acts 2 and looks at the moment everything changes. The disciples had an extraordinary mission, but Jesus told them to wait for the power to fulfill it. In Acts 2, the promised Holy Spirit comes, and ordinary people begin living with courage, purity, power, and mission they did not have on their own.

Acts 1:8 gave the promise: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses...” Acts 2 shows us what happened next.

1. THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES Acts 2:1-13 begins on the day of Pentecost, the fulfillment of the Feast of Weeks. The believers are gathered in one place when suddenly there is a sound like a mighty wind, what looked like tongues of fire, and everyone present is filled with the Holy Spirit. Ezekiel 36:25-27 points to God cleansing His people, giving them a new heart, and putting His Spirit within them. In John 14:15-18, Jesus tells His disciples that the Holy Spirit is WITH them and will later be IN them.

2. AMAZED, PERPLEXED, OR RIDICULED? Acts 2 records three responses to what God was doing:
1. AMAZED
2. PERPLEXED
3. RIDICULED
Some stood in awe. Some could not wrap their minds around it. Others mocked what they did not understand. There are moments when faith is the appropriate response: “I don’t understand everything, but God, I want more of You.” 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 reminds us that God often chooses what the world considers foolish or weak so that no one can boast in His presence. When God moves outside what you can control or explain, will it lead you toward Him or away from Him?

3. THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERS US FOR MISSION Peter shows us the transformation. The disciple who had stumbled and lacked courage now stands before thousands with clarity and boldness. In Acts 2:14-18, Peter explains the outpouring of the Spirit. In Acts 2:22-24 and 32-33, he boldly declares the death and resurrection of Jesus. Peter did not suddenly become more impressive. He was filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit empowers ordinary people to make Jesus known.

4. GOD’S MISSION IS TO GATHER Acts 2 points us back to Genesis 11 and the Tower of Babel. At Babel, humanity gathered around its own name and purposes, and people were scattered. At Pentecost, people from many nations and languages are gathered. The Holy Spirit is poured out, the good news is heard across languages, and God begins gathering His Church around one Spirit. • GOD’S MISSION IS TO GATHER. • THE ENEMY’S OPPOSITION IS TO SCATTER. The enemy will try to divide, isolate, discourage, persecute, and scatter the Church. But God will not be stopped.

5. WHAT SHOULD WE DO? In Acts 2:37-39, Peter’s words pierce the hearts of the people and they ask, “What should we do?” Peter responds: Repent of your sins, turn to God, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:41 tells us about 3,000 people believed, were baptized, and were added to the Church that day. Those who walk in the Spirit are FILLED by the Spirit, LED by the Spirit, and EMPOWERED by the Spirit. It all started with believers gathered together in prayer.

KEY TAKEAWAY: The Holy Spirit changes everything. He fills and empowers ordinary people to live on mission, makes Jesus known through His Church, and gathers what sin and the enemy have tried to scatter.

CALL TO ACTION: Ask yourself: • Am I amazed, perplexed, or resistant to what God wants to do? • Am I trying to understand everything before I trust Him? • Am I living filled, led, and empowered by the Holy Spirit? Then pray: “Holy Spirit, do what You want to do. Fill me. Lead me. Empower me for Your mission.”
