What does a Spirit-filled church actually look like, especially when its community is hurting?
In Part 3 of Called to Gather, Pastor Rachel Miller takes us into Acts 2:42-47 and the first Christian church: a Spirit-empowered community marked not only by what they believed, but by how they lived together.
This service also includes a special time of prayer and ministry for the Silver Rail Elementary School community following the recent tragedy at the school. We pause to pray for those carrying grief, fear, anger, confusion, and heaviness, asking God to bring comfort, peace, healing, strength, and His presence. If this tragedy has affected you or someone you love, we would be honored to pray with you. You do not have to carry it alone. That connects deeply with Acts 2. The early Church was not a collection of spectators. They were a devoted people who learned together, cared for one another, shared life, opened their homes, and prayed together.
Acts 2:42 begins with three powerful words: THEY DEVOTED THEMSELVES. Their community did not happen accidentally. They steadfastly gave themselves to the Lord and to one another.
1. THEY WERE LEARNERS Acts 2:42 says they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching. They gathered, listened, learned, and received teaching with humility. Hebrews 10:25 reminds us not to neglect meeting together, and 2 Timothy 3:16 shows us that Scripture teaches, corrects, and trains us to do what is right. AM I TEACHABLE?
2. THEY WERE CARING Acts 2:45 shows a people willing to respond when someone among them had a need. Their generosity flowed from love, gratitude, trust in God as Provider, and devotion to one another. AM I WILLING TO GIVE?
3. THEY WERE CONNECTED The early believers were devoted to fellowship. They shared life face-to-face, attended the temple together, and broke bread in their homes. Christianity was not simply something they believed. It became a shared life. CAN MY LIFE BE DESCRIBED AS SHARED? The Church brings together people with different backgrounds and stories, but we share something greater: A common story of redemption because of MERCY. A common allegiance to KING JESUS. A common MISSION to reach those who have yet to come. And we are united by ONE SPIRIT. AM I WILLING TO OPEN MY DOOR?
4. THEY WERE PEOPLE OF PRAYER Genuine revival will always be marked by a love of prayer. Prayer is talking to God, and we can talk to Him about all of it: pain, suffering, anger, loneliness, gratitude, and the things we do not know how to carry. Colossians 4:2 says to devote ourselves to prayer. AM I TALKING TO GOD? AM I GIVING HIM TIME TO RESPOND? AM I ACTIVELY DEPENDENT ON HIM? Something powerful happens when we pray personally, and something powerful happens when we come together in unified prayer.
THEY WERE ATTRACTIVE Acts 2:47 shows a church whose devotion became visible to the people around them. What if the Church were known as generous, joyful, selfless, teachable, humble, hospitable, welcoming, gracious, grateful, full of prayer, rooted in the Word, and willing to carry one another’s burdens? That kind of community makes Jesus visible.
KEY TAKEAWAY: A Spirit-filled church is a devoted people. We learn together. We care for one another. We share life. We open our homes. We pray together. And when our community is hurting, we show up for one another and bring what we cannot fix to Jesus.
CALL TO ACTION: Ask yourself: Am I teachable? Am I willing to give? Can my life be described as shared? Am I willing to open my door? Am I talking to God and giving Him time to respond?
