I Am, The Bread of Life: Part 1

In I Am Part 1: The Bread of Life, Pastor Nichole Crowley opens Joy Church’s new I Am: Life in His Name series with an honest look at one of the deepest human realities: hunger. Not just physical hunger, but soul hunger. The kind that keeps reaching, craving, and consuming, yet still never feels fully satisfied.

The series begins with the purpose behind John’s Gospel. In John 20:31, John says these things were written so we would believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in Him we would have life in His name. That is the heartbeat of this whole series: to see Jesus clearly, trust Him fully, and find real life in Him.

In John 6, a crowd follows Jesus after He miraculously feeds them. Their stomachs were full, but their hearts still missed what was right in front of them. In John 6:26 to 27, Jesus tells them they are chasing bread that perishes instead of seeking the life only He can give. At the center of the sermon are 2 clear realities:

1. Jesus sees the hunger

2. Jesus satisfies the deepest hunger First, Jesus sees the hunger. The crowd wanted more food, more provision, more of what had just made them feel taken care of. But Jesus saw a greater hunger underneath it all. When they asked what work God required, Jesus answered in John 6:29, “Believe in the one he has sent.” They were asking what to do. He was pointing them to who to trust. Even then, they looked backward. In John 6:31, they brought up manna in the wilderness, still focused on bread they could hold and consume. But Jesus was leading them beyond temporary provision. Second, Jesus satisfies the deepest hunger. In John 6:32 to 33, Jesus explains that the Father gives the true bread from heaven, the One who comes down and gives life to the world. Then in John 6:35, He says it plainly: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” That is the turning point of the whole message.

Jesus does not just provide what we need. He is what we need. He is not only the provider. He is the provision. He is not only the giver of the gift. He is the gift. This goes deeper than a lesson about bread or provision. It gets to what we run to when we are empty, what we believe will finally satisfy us, and whether we recognize that our deepest need is Christ Himself.

The invitation of John 6 is simple and searching: Come to Jesus. Believe in Jesus. Receive life in His name. If you have been filling your life with things that never seem to last, if you are tired of reaching for what leaves you empty again, or if you are trying to understand who Jesus really is, this is a strong place to begin.

Key Takeaway: Temporary things may fill you for a moment, but only Jesus can satisfy the deepest hunger of the soul. He does not just give life. He is life.

Call to Action: Ask yourself honestly: what have I been turning to for satisfaction, comfort, or fulfillment that cannot truly last? Then take 1 step this week: Come to Jesus. Believe in Jesus. Receive life in His name.
