I Am, The Light of the World: Part 2
In I Am Part 2: The Light of the World, Pastor Dave Miller continues Joy Church’s I Am: Life in His Name series with a practical look at what Jesus meant when He said, “I am the light of the world.”
This is not only about seeing Jesus more clearly. It is about letting Him bring direction, understanding, truth, and life into places that once felt dark or confusing. The sermon begins with Paul’s encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. In Acts 22, a bright light from heaven surrounds Paul, and he realizes the Lord he had been resisting was Jesus.
His physical eyes were temporarily blinded, but spiritually the lights came on. That same idea runs through the entire sermon. Jesus does not stand far away from our lives. He is present and active. In John 8:58, Jesus says, “Before Abraham was born, I AM,” identifying Himself with the name God gave Moses in Exodus 3:14 to 15. That name reveals a God who exists eternally and is present and active now.
So when Jesus says in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world,” He is saying something powerful: I am the present and active light of the world. 1 John 1:5 tells us that God is light and there is no darkness in Him. Jesus then promises in John 8:12 that whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
Why do we need that light? 2 Corinthians 4:4 explains that the enemy blinds people so they cannot see the truth of the Gospel. John 12:46 says Jesus came as light so that those who believe in Him would not remain in darkness. Without light, we lose direction. John 12:35 says the person who walks in darkness does not know where they are going, and Proverbs 29:18 warns that without vision or divine guidance, people lose their way.
From there, the sermon shows how the light of Jesus changes 3 important areas of life:
1. Our Salvation God does not want anyone to remain lost in darkness. According to 2 Peter 3:9, He is patient because He does not want anyone to perish. We cannot reach God by being good enough, religious enough, or trying harder. God is light, and sin separates us from Him. Jesus went to the cross, paid the price for our sin, and offers His righteousness to everyone who believes. He brings us out of darkness and makes us sons and daughters of light.
2. Everyday Life Jesus does not only give light for eternity. He gives direction for life right now. Psalm 119:105 says God’s Word is a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. Psalm 119:130 says the unfolding of His Word gives light and understanding. That means God can bring wisdom into parenting, marriage, work, finances, decisions, relationships, and the parts of life where we do not know what to do next. As we read His Word, learn from it, and follow it, the path becomes clearer.
3. End Times Jesus warned in Luke 21:8, “Watch out that you are not deceived.” We live in a time when truth is often blurred, good is called evil, and darkness is presented as light. Isaiah 5:20 warns against reversing good and evil. Isaiah 8:20 teaches that anything contradicting God’s Word is darkness. Ephesians 5:8 to 11 reminds believers that we were once darkness, but now we are light in the Lord, so we should live as children of light through goodness, righteousness, and truth.
Jesus is not just a light for one moment. He is the present and active light who helps us see salvation clearly, navigate everyday life, and recognize truth in confusing times.
