I Am, The Door: Part 3
In I Am Part 3: The Door, Professor Travis Arnold of Portland Bible College continues Joy Church’s I Am: Life in His Name series by unpacking one of Jesus’ most powerful claims: “I am the door.” This message connects John 9 and John 10, showing that Jesus’ words were not spoken in isolation.
They came after a man born blind was healed, questioned, rejected, and ultimately cast out by religious leaders who believed they were protecting access to God. But Jesus found him. In John 9:1 to 7, Jesus meets the man in his blindness, brings cleansing, and opens his eyes.
What looked like only a healing was also a sign pointing to something greater: Jesus is the true place where God’s presence, forgiveness, healing, worship, and life are found. When the man later declares his faith and worships Jesus in John 9:35 to 38, the story reaches its deeper purpose.
The one who had been excluded by religious leaders was welcomed by Christ Himself. That is the setting for Jesus’ declaration in John 10:7 to 10: “I am the door. If anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture... I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”
Jesus is not simply one possible entrance to God. He is the true and living access to the Father. Through this message, we see 4 life-changing realities of what it means that Jesus is the Door:
1. Acceptance Like the man born blind, we do not find Jesus because we are good enough, worthy enough, or spiritually capable enough. Jesus comes looking for us. John 9 shows a man who was blind, rejected, and cast out, yet personally sought out by Jesus. Our acceptance is not based on our righteousness. It is found in Christ alone. Jesus cleanses us, opens our eyes, and welcomes us into His life.
2. Access to God’s Presence The temple represented God’s presence, worship, sacrifice, forgiveness, healing, and His Word. But throughout John’s Gospel, Jesus reveals that He is the true Temple. In John 2:19 to 21, Jesus says, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up,” speaking about His own body. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus became the way we enter God’s presence. John 14:6 makes this clear: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” We do not earn access. We receive it through Jesus.
3. Assurance John 10:9 says those who enter through Jesus “will go in and out and find pasture.” This does not describe leaving Christ. It describes the security of belonging to Him wherever life takes us. The Shepherd is present when we come in and when we go out. We do not have to live controlled by fear, worry, or uncertainty. In Christ, we have assurance that we are His and that His presence goes with us.
4. Abundance Jesus contrasts false shepherds who steal, kill, and destroy with the life He gives. In John 10:10, He says, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” Biblical abundance is bigger than money or possessions. It is the whole-life goodness that flows from being rooted in Christ: His presence, joy, peace, purpose, healthy relationships, provision, favor, and spiritual life. Jesus does not merely open the door to a slightly improved life. He brings us into His own life.
